An Elopement. Is it for you? Affordability, flexibility and the option to be wildly unique attracts many couples. Even if you’ve never really considered the idea or just aren’t sure where to start I can promise that you can have a beautiful wedding whether it’s big, small, in the mountains, in the city or on a beach. It’s really just about you two.
Megan and Miso were the perfect couple for a Virginia Elopement. She wanted an awesome dress, but nothing over the top. He just wanted to make her happy. They exchanged vows in a tiny courthouse in Arlington with just the two of them and myself present. Right after they said I do, they popped out into the hallway to be greeted by their Mom’s and families. With a few tears and and a happy dance from the bride and groom we decided to head over to Lady Bird Island to take photos. We had discussed a lot of places, but they had a few key points in mine. 1- it had to be easy to get to and have parking. 2. It had to have a great view and 3. They really loved the idea of being somewhere without a ton of other people. Lady Bird Island is the perfect fit for that. Just south of Arlington, along the river with views overlooking the city and easy parking for everyone at the Marina. A quick 10 minute walk takes you down the path and straight to the most beautiful set of willows Northern Virginia has to offer.
With Mom’s in arm, and holding hands we strolled down the path to find some beautiful spots. Without any of the stresses of a typical day, Megan could just relax through our photo session. And Miso? Well.. he just couldn’t stop smiling. Even when Megan would step away for a minute he would watch her go and smile his great big happy smile. So what do you need to do to have an Elopement in Virginia? You’ll need to apply for a marriage license. That’s pretty much required. Once that’s settled, decide who you’re going to have officiate your ceremony.. Justice of the Peace? A certified Officiant? A friend? Each has their pros and cons, but whatever you choose, book that person next. After that -decide who you really want to have there. Is it just the two of you? Do you want parents and siblings? Or is this more of a best friend kind of wedding? Lastly.. Book your photographer! You’ll want to make sure you find someone that you really click with. When there’s less people actually at your wedding, the time you spend with each person really matters. So make sure your photographer is just as awesome as you are. (Hint: I totally am)
